Tier I · GheistField
An old needle meter that clicks when it picks something up. The needle wobbles and isn’t precise: you recognize EMF 5 because it shoots all the way over, past the 5 mark, and barely drops.
Tier II · K2
The classic K2: five colored lights and a tone that rises with the level. On EMF 5 all five light up and it gives a very high-pitched beep. If several readings are in range, it shows the highest one.
Tier III · EMF ParaMeter
A screen that tracks up to three readings at once, with their level, how many meters away they are and in which direction. Each one beeps periodically; the higher the level, the higher the pitch. It’s the best one for finding where a reading came from.
How to use it
- Turn it on and get close to wherever the ghost just did something: opened a door, threw an object, turned on a light. Each interaction leaves a reading that lasts about 20 seconds.
- The level tells you what happened: 2 is an interaction (or an ability), 3 a thrown object and 4 a manifestation. Level 1 is the default state, with nothing going on.
- During a hunt, or when the ghost manifests, it malfunctions within 10 m of the ghost and shows random values from 1 to 4. Holding it turned on within 7.5 m during a hunt makes it easier for the ghost to find you.
When it counts as evidence
- If the ghost has EMF Level 5, every reading that would have been level 2 or 3 has a 33% chance of being level 5 instead.
- It doesn’t matter how strong or dangerous the activity is: EMF 5 is just a special reading, not a danger warning.
What isn’t evidence
- Levels 2, 3 and 4, however high they look.
- The random values it shows when the ghost manifests or hunts nearby.
Tips
- Leave objects in its room and turn off the light: the ghost can’t throw things if its room is lit, and every interaction is another chance at EMF 5.
- Read the screen or the lights, not just the sound: on some speakers the level 5 tone is easy to confuse with level 4.
- An EMF Reader dropped on the floor makes a lot of noise when it malfunctions: it tells you roughly where the ghost is during a hunt.
Trivia
- The Tier II K2 meter is a real device and one of the most used by TV ghost hunters.
