Tier I · Old AM/FM radio
A small AM/FM radio with a poor-quality speaker. When you ask something, its ghost light flashes: red if it heard you and there was no response, white if the ghost answered. It only reaches 3 m and responds half the time.
Tier II · P-SB7T
A modern Spirit Box with a better speaker and a backlit screen that’s easy to read in the dark. If there’s no response, a black X shows up; if the ghost answers, a small ghost icon shows up instead. It reaches 4 m.
Tier III · SB11-Z
A large box that scans two channels at once and has a noise filter that cuts the static between responses. The RESPONSE LEDs flash red if there’s no response and white, in time with the voice, if there is. It reaches 5 m and responds the most.
How to use it
- Turn it on inside the ghost’s room, turn off every light in that room and ask a question out loud (or pick one from the text menu). There are aggression, location and age questions.
- The light or icon tells you whether it heard the question: red or an X means no response; white or the ghost icon, with a distorted voice, is a response. For location questions, “Here,” “Close” or “Behind” means it’s within 2 m, and “Away” or “Far” means 2 to 5 m.
- During a hunt, holding it turned on within 7.5 m of the ghost on the same floor draws the ghost to you. When it malfunctions from interference, all its lights flicker rapidly.
When it counts as evidence
- You have to be in the same room as the ghost and within 3, 4 or 5 m, depending on the tier. Where the Spirit Box itself is doesn’t matter, as long as it’s with you.
- Every light in the room must be off. Light from equipment doesn’t count, and lights in other rooms can stay on with the door open.
- If the ghost “only responds to people who are alone,” there must be just one person in the room when you ask. On Amateur and Intermediate, the journal tells you whether it responds to everyone or only to people who are alone.
- Once all of that is true, each question has a 50%, 60% or 70% chance of a response, depending on the tier. It also counts if the ghost answers with its voice while the Spirit Box is malfunctioning from interference, even during a hunt.
What isn’t evidence
- The ghost touching a door or an object while you ask.
- Its lights flickering during a ghost event or a hunt.
- The ghost event sound where the ghost repeats certain words.
Tips
- Use it as soon as you find the ghost room: you have to stay alone in the dark with the ghost for several seconds, and that drains your sanity fast, especially on higher difficulties.
- A red light doesn’t rule it out: the chance may have failed or you were out of range. Move closer and ask several times before crossing it off.
- Turn it off when you’re not using it: its static covers up ghost sounds, and the game can take something you say as a question.
- Watch out for the Moroi: if it responds, it curses you, and it sounds just like a normal response. The Deogen, if you’re within 1 m, sometimes answers with heavy breathing.
Trivia
- The response voices are heavily edited voices of several Phasmophobia content creators.
- If you ask “Are you French?”, the ghost answers, because the game hears “Are you friendly?”.
