StrengthUsing protective equipment pushes the ghost to become enraged, weakening equipment effects.
WeaknessBeing enraged exhausts the Gallu, making protective equipment more effective.
How it hunts
Hunt sanity threshold
- Normal: 50%
- Enraged: 60%
- Weakened: 40%
Standard: 50% average sanity.
Speed
Normal 1.7 m/s · enraged 1.955 m/s · weakened 1.36 m/s.
Standard: 1.7 m/s; speeds up with line of sight to 2.8 m/s over 13 s.
All its footsteps- Three states in a cycle: normal -> enraged -> (when a hunt ends) weakened -> normal.
- It moves up a state when it burns a Crucifix, when the Incense blinding effect ends during a hunt, after Incense outside of a hunt, or 2-3 s after stepping in Salt.
- Crucifix: 2 m less range when enraged, 1 m more when weakened.
- Incense blinding effect: 5 s normal, 4 s enraged, 6 s weakened.
How it behaves
- While enraged it does NOT disturb Salt.
- While weakened it leaves 6 footprints after stepping in Salt (4 for other ghosts).
How to test it
Just one Salt pile
StrongHow: Put several Salt piles in its path.
Result: If it steps in the first one and then stops stepping in the rest even though it walks over them, it’s a Gallu (it got enraged).
Protection that costs you
HintHow: Compare the hunt speed after a Crucifix or Incense has been used.
Result: If the next hunt is faster, it points to a Gallu.

How to survive
- Watch out with Incense and Tier III Salt when you’re running: it comes at you faster afterwards.
- Tier III Sanity Medication gives you speed without enraging it.
- If you survive a hunt while it’s enraged, the next ones will be easier.

Mechanics
A Tier I Crucifix on the floor NEVER stops an enraged Gallu: its head is 1.5 m up and the Crucifix only reaches 1 m when it’s enraged.
Even Tier I Salt, which doesn’t slow any ghost down, enrages it.
Its state changes don’t stack: two Salt piles in a row won’t take it from weakened to enraged in one go.
Folklore
In Sumerian and Mesopotamian mythology, the gallu is an underworld demon that drags people down; it appears in the descent of Inanna.

Ability: three states
The Gallu has three states: normal, enraged and weakened. It starts in the normal state, where it behaves like a standard ghost. It goes from normal to enraged, or from weakened to normal, in these cases:
- Instantly, when it burns a Crucifix.
- Instantly, when the Incense blinding effect wears off during a hunt.
- If it’s affected by Incense outside of a hunt, after a time equal to the last Incense blinding effect it went through:
- instantly, if it was never smudged during a hunt;
- 4 s, if it was enraged the last time;
- 5 s, if it was normal;
- 6 s, if it was weakened.
- 2 s after stepping in Salt, if it’s normal.
- 3 s after stepping in Salt, if it’s weakened.
The changes don’t stack. For example, if it’s weakened and steps in a second Salt pile 1 s after the first, it won’t become enraged 1 s after going back to normal.
Activity
- It can’t disturb Salt while it’s enraged.
- If it steps in Salt while weakened, it can leave footprints for up to 3 s: 6 footprints instead of the 4 other ghosts leave.
Hunt
If a hunt ends with the Gallu enraged, it instantly becomes weakened (this is what counts toward the “Abilities used” statistic).
| Behavior | Normal | Enraged | Weakened |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hunt sanity threshold | 50% | 60% | 40% |
| Crucifix range | Standard | 2 m less | 1 m more |
| Base speed | 1.7 m/s | 1.955 m/s | 1.36 m/s |
| Incense blinding effect | 5 s | 4 s | 6 s |
| Tier III Salt slowing effect | 2 s | none | 3 s |
Strategy
- Be very careful, especially while gathering evidence. Since it has Ultraviolet, you may want to confirm it or get extra photos with Salt, and if it steps in the Salt it becomes enraged. The Salt’s tier doesn’t matter: even Tier I Salt enrages it, even though it doesn’t affect its hunt.
- For identifying it, this works in your favor: while enraged it can’t step in Salt, so if it only stepped in one pile and no others (even though it walked over them), it’s probably a Gallu. Don’t confuse it with the Wraith, which doesn’t step in Salt either and shares Spirit Box and EMF Level 5 with the Gallu. If you used Incense nearby or a Crucifix was used up shortly before you tested the Salt, and the Salt is untouched, consider the Gallu.
- When escaping during a hunt, slowing it with Incense or Tier III Salt will make it speed up afterwards. If you don’t reach safety before the effect runs out, it’ll cost you. Tier III Sanity Medication is a better option: it gives you speed without enraging it.
- If you know you can survive a hunt, enraging it on purpose pays off: when the hunt ends it’s weakened and the following hunts are easier.
Trivia
- In Mesopotamian and Sumerian mythology, the gallu (or galla) is an underworld demon that dragged people down there until it was appeased with animal sacrifices. It appears most notably in the story of Inanna’s descent to the underworld.
- A Tier I Crucifix placed on the floor never prevents hunts from an enraged Gallu: the ghost’s head is 1.5 m above the floor and the Crucifix would only have 1 m of range.
