Goryo

Its D.O.T.S silhouette only shows up on a Video Camera, and only when no one is in the room with it.

On Nightmare and Insanity it always shows D.O.T.S Projector.

How it hunts

Hunt sanity threshold

  • Always: 50%

Standard: 50% average sanity.

Speed

1.7 m/s, the same as most ghosts.

Speeds up with line of sight, up to 2.8 m/s over 13 s.

All its footsteps

How it behaves

  • It only enters the D.O.T.S state if there are no players in the same room.
  • Its D.O.T.S silhouette can’t be seen with the naked eye: only through a Video Camera.
  • It only does short roams: it never changes its favorite room.
  • It roams less, so it interacts more: it’s the ghost that interacts the most at 0 sanity.

How to test it

  • On camera only

    Conclusive

How: Point a Video Camera at the D.O.T.S Projector and leave the room.

Result: If the silhouette shows up on the camera but not to the naked eye, it’s a Goryo.

What rules it out

  • Seeing its D.O.T.S silhouette with the naked eye.
  • No D.O.T.S Projector on difficulties with only 1 or 2 evidence types.
  • Changing its favorite room.

Share two evidence

If those two are all you’ve found, it could still be any of these.

How to survive

  • It almost always hunts near its room: have hiding spots far from it.

More facts

Mechanics

  • It’s the only ghost that can enter the D.O.T.S state with The Hermit card or the Monkey Paw’s “trap” wish.

Edge cases

Trivia

  • You can take a valid D.O.T.S photo of it even though it doesn’t show up in the photo: the camera detects it, and it counts toward the objective to capture a photo of the ghost.

Folklore

  • In Japan, onryō (vengeful spirits) were worshipped as goryō (“honorable spirit”) to calm their anger.

In depth

Based on the article “Goryo” on the Phasmophobia Wiki on Fandom (version of September 27, 2026, authors), under the CC BY-SA 3.0 license. Rewritten and adapted by Phasmopedia.

Activity

  • It roams less than other ghosts and, because of that, interacts more: it’s the ghost with the most interactions at 0% sanity.
  • It only does short roams, never long ones, so it can’t change its favorite room on any difficulty. Only the Monkey Paw’s sanity wish can change that.
  • D.O.T.S on camera only. It only enters the D.O.T.S state if it’s in its favorite room and there are no players in that room. Its D.O.T.S silhouette can only be seen through a Video Camera, not with the naked eye. During ghost events and hunts it manifests normally.
  • From the roaming state, it has a 2/3 chance to enter the D.O.T.S state (1/3 for other ghosts).
  • When choosing the favorite room state, it has a 10% chance to enter the D.O.T.S state instead. That makes it the only ghost that can appear in D.O.T.S even when roaming is disabled by The Hermit card or the Monkey Paw’s trap wish.
  • In the D.O.T.S state, if anyone is in the investigation area, it moves toward a point within 1 m (2 m for other ghosts), always inside its favorite room.
  • Advanced mechanic (not officially verified): if it’s in its favorite room, it can move toward its roam waypoint while still idle and choose other actions along the way. That makes it the only ghost that can return to its favorite room in the middle of a roam.

Evidence

In contracts with only 1 or 2 evidence types, the Goryo always keeps D.O.T.S Projector.

How to identify it

  • You need a Video Camera pointed at an active D.O.T.S Projector, or held by a player outside the room. If the silhouette shows up on the camera’s screen but not to the naked eye, it’s probably a Goryo. If you can see it without a camera, it’s not a Goryo.
  • Ghost events only need you to be fairly close; the ghost doesn’t have to roam to perform them (at most it teleports). A ghost event somewhat far from its room doesn’t rule it out, but one very far away generally does.
  • With 1 or 2 evidence, if D.O.T.S Projector isn’t one of them, it’s not a Goryo.
  • If it won’t show up in D.O.T.S, have everyone leave the investigation area: the D.O.T.S state usually lasts longer that way.
  • With no evidence (custom difficulty with 0) it’s almost impossible to confirm, because all that’s left is its fixed room and its short roams, and other ghosts can behave that way too. Wait and see if it changes rooms at low sanity, or use Motion Sensors and Salt to see how far it travels in one go. Always hunting from the same room also points to it, especially with a high Roaming frequency.

Trivia

  • In Japanese folklore, people feared that the soul of someone who died tragically would become a vengeful spirit (an onryō, like the Onryo) that caused disasters and epidemics. To appease it, it was worshipped as a goryō (御霊, “honorable spirit”). That word can also be read mitama, a respectful way of referring to ancestral spirits.
  • In the game it has none of that: it shares ghost models and names with the other ghosts, so it has an American look and name.
  • You can take a “D.O.T.S Ghost” photo of its silhouette: the light on the Tier I Photo Camera and the frame on the Tier II and III ones detect it like any other subject. Just like with the Phantom, the ghost doesn’t show up in the photo, but it counts toward the optional objective to capture a photo of the ghost.
