WeaknessMylings make more frequent paranormal sounds.
How it hunts
Hunt sanity threshold
- Always: 50%
Standard: 50% average sanity.
Speed
1.7 m/s, the same as most ghosts.
Speeds up with line of sight, up to 2.8 m/s over 13 s.
All its footsteps- Its footsteps and vocalizations during a hunt can only be heard within 12 m (20 m for other ghosts), barely more than the 10 m electronic interference range.
Its footsteps barely warn you
During a hunt, a normal ghost’s footsteps can be heard from 20 m, but the Myling’s only from 12 m. Your electronics start to flicker at 10 m. With a normal ghost you hear footsteps 5.9 s before your electronics flicker; with the Myling, only 1.2 s. If your electronics flicker and you can barely hear it, it is probably a Myling.
Both walk toward you at 1.7 m/s. It does not work if the ghost is on another floor: that muffles the sound too.
How it behaves
- Makes a paranormal sound every 64-127 s (80-127 s for other ghosts).
How to test it
Two sounds in a row
ConclusiveHow: Listen with the Parabolic Microphone or the Sound Recorder.
Result: Two paranormal sounds less than 80 s apart = Myling.
Interference without footsteps
StrongHow: Leave a piece of equipment turned on next to your hiding spot and listen during the hunt.
Result: If the equipment malfunctions and you still can’t hear footsteps (on the same floor), it points to a Myling.

How to survive
- In long hallways, keep your eyes open: not hearing it doesn’t mean you’re safe.
- The Parabolic Microphone picks it up just like any other ghost.

Trivia
It’s pronounced “mai-ling” (or “me-ling” in the traditional form).
Folklore
In Scandinavian folklore, mylings are the ghosts of abandoned or unbaptized children who ask to be carried to hallowed ground; if you fail, they kill you. In the game, its age and ghost model are random.

Activity
It makes a paranormal sound on the Parabolic Microphone or the Sound Recorder every 64 to 127 s, instead of every 80 to 127 s like other ghosts.
Hunt
Its footsteps and vocalizations during a hunt can only be heard within 12 m (normally it’s 20 m). That’s barely more than the electronic interference range (10 m). Near the limit the footsteps sound muffled, but they quickly become clear as it gets closer.
How to identify it
By sound. Take advantage of the small gap between the range of its footsteps (12 m) and the electronic interference range (10 m), with a rough feel for those distances. If you can barely hear the ghost (or can’t hear it at all) right when your electronics start to malfunction, it’s probably a Myling. This doesn’t work if the ghost is on another floor, because that muffles the sound too. Ways to test it:
- Before the hunt, leave a piece of electronic equipment turned on at your hiding spot and pay attention during the hunt.
- During the hunt, hold a piece of electronic equipment that’s turned on or use global chat, with Incense on hand.
The Raiju has a longer interference range (15 m) and can produce a similar effect. Rule it out some other way, like its speed.
By paranormal sounds. If you pick up two paranormal sounds within 80 s on the Parabolic Microphone or the Sound Recorder, it’s a Myling.
Survival tips
On large maps, especially in long hallways, look for it with your eyes: since it’s harder to hear, it can catch you off guard and, if it sees you, it speeds up for longer. A Parabolic Microphone solves the problem, because it picks up the ghost’s footsteps and vocalizations if it’s in range, Myling or not.
Trivia
- In Scandinavian folklore, myling are the ghosts of children who were killed by their parents, abandoned or died unbaptized. Without baptism they can’t rest, and they wander until they convince someone to carry them (or their body) to hallowed ground. If the person fails, they kill them. In the game, the Myling’s age and ghost model are random: it doesn’t have to be a child.
- Another way for them to find peace is to find and kill their mother. To move from where they’re buried, they usually need someone to carry them or “permission” from a relative, which they get through trickery or by wording the request vaguely. They’re usually described as small, decaying children, but they can appear at the adult age they would be if they were still alive.
