How it hunts
Hunt sanity threshold
- Always: 50%
Standard: 50% average sanity.
Speed
Based on the temperature of the room it’s passing through: above 15 °C 1.4 m/s · 12-15 °C 1.75 · 9-12 °C 2.1 · 6-9 °C 2.3 · 3-6 °C 2.4 · 0-3 °C 2.5 · below 0 °C 2.7 m/s.
Standard: 1.7 m/s; speeds up with line of sight to 2.8 m/s over 13 s.
All its footsteps- With the fuse box off, it emits freezing breath near its head every 3 s during a hunt (on any difficulty).
Faster in the cold
Its speed depends on the temperature of the room it is passing through, and it does not speed up when it sees you. In a warm room it moves at 1.4 m/s, slower than you running; below 0 °C it moves at 2.7 m/s and covers 10 m in 3.7 s. Loop it through warm rooms.
A 10 m straight-line race, without line of sight (so neither speeds up), at 100% ghost speed. “You 2.1” is your average running speed.
How it behaves
- It never turns the fuse box on, and it turns it off twice as often.
How to test it
The breath
Conclusivehigh riskHow: Turn off the fuse box and watch the ghost during a hunt (with Incense).
Result: The freezing breath confirms it.
Changing footsteps
StrongHow: With the fuse box on, listen to its footsteps from a hiding spot.
Result: Fast in cold rooms and slower than normal in warm rooms, with sudden changes.
What rules it out
- Turning on the fuse box.
- No Freezing Temperatures on difficulties with only 1 or 2 evidence types.
- Speeding up with line of sight.

How to survive
- Get away from its cold room as soon as the hunt starts.
- Leave the fuse box on so the house doesn’t cool down.
More facts
Mechanics
Its freezing breath doesn’t count as evidence, so it shows up even in contracts with 0 evidence.
Edge cases
It’s especially dangerous in Light Snow on Maple Lodge Campsite or Camp Woodwind: with the fuse box off, the whole map gets colder.
Folklore
“Hantu” simply means “spirit” or “ghost” in Indonesian and Malay, and it doesn’t have to be evil.
In depth
Based on the article “Hantu” on the Phasmophobia Wiki on Fandom (version of August 14, 2026, authors), under the CC BY-SA 3.0 license. Rewritten and adapted by Phasmopedia.
Activity
It can’t turn on the fuse box, and it turns it off twice as often as other ghosts. Because of that, it performs slightly fewer ghost events.
Hunt
Its speed depends on the temperature of the room it’s passing through:
| Room temperature | Speed |
|---|---|
| Above 15 °C | 1.4 m/s |
| 12 to 15 °C | 1.75 m/s |
| 9 to 12 °C | 2.1 m/s |
| 6 to 9 °C | 2.3 m/s |
| 3 to 6 °C | 2.4 m/s |
| 0 to 3 °C | 2.5 m/s |
| Below 0 °C | 2.7 m/s |
- Unlike almost every other ghost, it doesn’t speed up with line of sight.
- Freezing breath. If the fuse box is off, it emits freezing breath near its head every 3 s during a hunt, in any room. Dead players can’t see it. Since it isn’t evidence, it can show up on any difficulty.
Evidence
In contracts with only 1 or 2 evidence types, the Hantu always keeps Freezing Temperatures.
Strategy
- Temperature is key to both identifying it and defending yourself. It’s most dangerous in and near its room, where it’s coldest. Get away as soon as a hunt starts: if you’re close, it catches you fast.
- In Light Snow it’s especially dangerous, above all on the outdoor maps (Maple Lodge Campsite and Camp Woodwind): with the fuse box off, the rooms get colder and it runs faster.
- In general it’s safer to leave the fuse box on, although turning it off helps you identify it.
How to identify it
1. By its speed. Leave the fuse box on for a while and listen to its speed during a hunt. If it’s faster in cold rooms (usually, but not always, the favorite room) and slower than normal in warm ones, it’s a Hantu. You can pick this up safely from a hiding spot: its footsteps are uneven and change pace abruptly as it moves from one temperature to another.
- The Raiju is fast near active electronics and normal away from them. With no evidence, remove all electronics first. With at least one piece of evidence, having Freezing Temperatures rules out the Raiju.
- The Jinn speeds up when it sees someone far away if the fuse box is on. Have everyone hide out of its sight, or turn off the fuse box right before or during the hunt.
- The Moroi also speeds up, but because sanity is dropping. Keep everyone’s sanity steady, and don’t take Sanity Medication or use sanity-draining cursed possessions during the hunt: they cause a very noticeable speed change in the Moroi that can throw you off.
2. By its freezing breath. With the fuse box off, the breath confirms it with no evidence, though it’s riskier. Look closely and use Incense to stun it while it hunts.
3. By looping it. With the fuse box on for a while, loop it around a large piece of furniture in a warm room during a hunt, with Incense on hand. If it doesn’t speed up with line of sight and has no other speed changes that point to another ghost, it’s probably a Hantu.
- Its mere presence cools the room down, so looping it keeps getting harder. On small maps (short hunts) you can last the whole hunt, but on medium or large maps, or with hunts extended by cursed possessions, don’t do it for long, or use a route that runs through several rooms.
- Sprinting nonstop, your average speed is 2.125 m/s: the Hantu is quite a bit slower than you above 12 °C, about the same between 9 and 12 °C, and faster below 9 °C. Carrying a Tier I Thermometer while you loop it tells you when to switch rooms or hide.
- If it’s warm and you trust your skills, you can loop it with the fuse box off to look for the freezing breath at the same time.
To rule it out:
- With 1 or 2 evidence, if Freezing Temperatures isn’t one of them, it’s not a Hantu.
- If it turns on the fuse box, it’s not a Hantu.
- It’s one of the three ghosts (along with the Kormos and the Onryo) whose three evidence types don’t rule out the Mimic. Confirm it with the methods above or check whether the Spirit Box responds: if it does, it’s the Mimic.
- It performs slightly fewer ghost events, because turning off the fuse box uses the same state as ghost events. With Event frequency set to Low the difference is clear (~29% versus ~41%), but with so few events it isn’t a reliable tell. On top of that, the Shade performs even fewer.
Trivia
In Indonesian and Malay, hantu means “spirit” or “ghost.” It usually refers to the spirits of the dead, but also to other invisible supernatural beings, such as demons. In mythology there are many kinds, and not all of them are evil.
