The journal
StrengthYureis have been known to have a stronger effect on people's sanity.
WeaknessSmudging the Yurei's place of death will trap it temporarily, reducing how much it wanders.
How it hunts
Hunt sanity threshold
- Always: 50%
Standard: 50% average sanity.
Speed
1.7 m/s, the same as most ghosts.
Speeds up with line of sight, up to 2.8 m/s over 13 s.
All its footstepsHow it behaves
- Its ability: if there’s an open door in its room, it drains 15% sanity from everyone within 7.5 m and closes that door completely (leaving EMF 2).
- Outside of hunts it only opens or closes doors completely, never partway.
- With Incense: trapped in its favorite room for 90 s, with no roaming and no D.O.T.S.
How to test it
Half-moved door
StrongHow: Leave doors half open (at 45°) near it.
Result: If it moves a door only slightly outside of a hunt, it’s NOT a Yurei.
Trapped
StrongHow: Use Incense in its room and put Motion Sensors in the doorways.
Result: If it leaves the room or shows up in D.O.T.S within 90 s, it’s NOT a Yurei.
15% drop
HintHow: Watch your sanity near its room with a door open.
Result: A door closing on its own + 15% less sanity point to a Yurei.
What rules it out
- Moving a door partway outside of a hunt.
- Leaving its room or entering its D.O.T.S state less than 90 s after being smudged.
Often confused with
How to survive
- Close the doors of its room so it can’t use its ability.
More facts
Mechanics
It moves doors with far more force than other ghosts (0.6 N versus 0.01-0.05 N), which is why it never leaves them partway outside of hunts.
According to the wiki, its ability closes the door smoothly and with no creaking sound; other guides say it slams it. Confirm in-game before relying on it.
Trivia
Ironically, the ghost with the “stronger effect on sanity” drains 15%, while the Jinn drains 25% and has other abilities on top of that.
Its ability also lowers the sanity of dead players.
History
Until v0.19.0 there was a bug: the sound of a door closing played much later, and people thought it was a Yurei.
In depth
Based on the article “Yurei” on the Phasmophobia Wiki on Fandom (version of September 3, 2026, authors), under the CC BY-SA 3.0 license. Rewritten and adapted by Phasmopedia.
Activity
- Incense. Besides preventing hunts and raising activity for a while, for 90 s it replaces every roam with the favorite room state. That also keeps it from entering its D.O.T.S state.
- Doors. It moves them with more force than other ghosts:
| Door type | Yurei’s force | Other ghosts’ force |
|---|---|---|
| Hinged | 0.6 N | 0.01 to 0.05 N |
| Sliding | 26 N | 1 to 2 N |
| Tent | 10 N | 0.5 to 0.7 N |
| With a creaking sound (hinged or sliding) | amplitude 1 | amplitude 0.2 to 1 |
- In practice, the Yurei can’t move a door slightly: it only closes it or opens it completely. (A bug keeps it from fully opening or closing locker doors.) During hunts this doesn’t apply and it moves doors like any other ghost.
- Outside of its ability, it doesn’t touch doors any more than other ghosts do.
Ability: shutting a door and draining sanity
First it checks whether its room has an open door. Mostly room doors count, along with exit doors, the large tent doors on the campsites, the Dining Room cabinet doors and the fireplace doors (Living Room and Games Room) on Point Hope, and the washing machine doors and Morgue doors on Sunny Meadows. Hiding spot doors do not count.
If there is one:
- Every player within 7.5 m loses 15% sanity. Players outside the investigation area aren’t affected.
- It picks a random open door in the room and closes it completely, smoothly (not with a slam) and with no creaking sound. This leaves an EMF 2 interaction on the door. Large tent doors don’t close all the way.
How to identify it
- By the doors. Leave doors open at 45° near the ghost to see how it moves them. Outside of hunts, if the ghost opens or closes a door without going all the way, it’s not a Yurei. Keep in mind: any ghost can open or close a door completely and smoothly, so seeing a door close all the way doesn’t confirm its ability.
- By the Incense. If it isn’t using its ability, test its weakness once you know its favorite room: smudge it and place Motion Sensors in the room’s doorways. If within the next 90 s it crosses the sensors and leaves (other than because of a ghost event) or shows up in D.O.T.S, it’s not a Yurei. If it does a ghost event outside its room and then roams away, that rules it out too.
Trivia
- Yūrei (“dim spirit” or “faint spirit”) is the general Japanese term for ghosts or spirits. They’re driven by very different emotions tied to their death (or to their last thought): they can be benevolent (caring for children, handing out sweets) or malevolent (getting revenge, making others suffer). The term includes subcategories like the onryō and the goryō (Onryo and Goryo in the game). Their appearance varies as much as their purpose: some look like normal people and others like horrific monsters.
- Although the journal says it has a stronger effect on sanity, it doesn’t increase passive sanity drain or drain sanity when you look at it, like the Phantom does. And the Jinn drains 25% at once (versus the Yurei’s 15%) and has other abilities on top of that, so by comparison the Yurei comes off as pretty weak.
- Its ability also drains sanity from dead players, who can come back with less sanity than they had if they’re revived.
