How it hunts

Hunt sanity threshold

  • Always: 50%

Standard: 50% average sanity.

Speed

1.0 m/s when it hasn’t detected you; 3.0 m/s as soon as it detects you (by sight, voice or equipment), until it reaches the last spot where it detected you. Then it slows down over about 2.7 s.

Standard: 1.7 m/s; speeds up with line of sight to 2.8 m/s over 13 s.

All its footsteps

Slow until it detects you

While it has not detected you it walks at 1 m/s, half your running speed. Once it detects you it runs at 3 m/s to the last place it sensed you, and if you are no longer there it slows down gradually to 1 m/s. Hide or move away from where it last saw you: once it gets there and cannot find you, it is slower than you again.

In the animation it detects you at 3 s and loses you 6 s later. 100% ghost speed. “You 2.1” is your average running speed.

How it behaves

    How to test it

    • Slow footsteps

      Strong

How: Hide and listen to its footsteps when it passes nearby.

Result: If the footsteps are few and far between, it’s a Revenant.

    • The sudden burst

      Strongvery high risk

How: Let it detect you, with an escape route and Incense ready.

Result: A huge jump in speed points to a Revenant.

    What rules it out

    • Normal speed while it hasn’t detected anyone.

    Often confused with

    Share two evidence

If those two are all you’ve found, it could still be any of these.

    How to survive

    • Hide as soon as the hunt starts: running won’t work for long.
    • If it’s chasing you, use Incense or Tier III Salt to buy time.

    More facts

    Folklore

    • “Revenant” comes from the French revenir (to return): a corpse that comes back from the dead to haunt the living.

    History

    • Before v0.8.0 it only sped up while it could see you, so breaking line of sight was enough to escape. Now it runs at 3 m/s to the last spot where it detected you.

    In depth

    Hunt

Its speed changes drastically between roaming and chasing:

    Situation Speed
    Roaming (hasn’t detected anyone) 1 m/s
After detecting someone (by sight, voice or electronics) 3 m/s, almost twice as fast as most ghosts
    • It stays at 3 m/s until it reaches the spot where it last detected someone.
    • When it goes back to roaming, it slows down gradually over about 2.7 s (0.75 m/s²) until it’s back to 1 m/s.
    • Unlike almost every other ghost, it doesn’t speed up with line of sight over time: its speed change is sudden.

    Strategy

    • It’s one of the most dangerous ghosts. Hide as soon as possible and be extremely careful not to give away your position during the hunt. You won’t be able to outrun it for long.
    • If it’s chasing you, Tier III Salt or Incense will slow it down or ward it off for a few seconds: use them to gain distance and hide.
    • Tier III Sanity Medication works too: the infinite sprint lets you match its speed for 10 s and maybe reach safety.

    How to identify it

    • From your hiding spot, listen to its footsteps: if it’s nearby and the footsteps are few and far between, it’s most likely a Revenant.
    • If you already have an escape plan, let it detect you and watch whether it speeds up suddenly and massively. Be careful not to confuse it with the Jinn, which also speeds up suddenly when it sees you; they’re easy to tell apart by their roaming speed.

    Trivia

    • The word revenant comes from the French revenir, “to return.”
    • In folklore, a revenant is a corpse that comes back from the dead to haunt the living. It appears across many regions and religions, such as Old Irish Celtic and Norse mythology. Many people use the word as a synonym for “ghost” or “undead.”
    • Today it’s one of the most feared ghosts, but before version 0.8.0 it only sped up while it could see a player, so breaking line of sight was enough to escape. Now it also runs to the last spot where it detected you.

    Change history

    Version Change
Alpha, 7 March 2020 Added the Revenant.
Alpha, 13 March 2020 Now requires Fingerprints as evidence instead of Bug.
0.3.0 Before this version, its evidence was EMF Level 5, Fingerprints and Ghost Writing.
0.8.0 It now speeds up just by detecting a player. It keeps its chasing speed until it reaches the last known position. After losing the player, it slows down gradually (0.75 m/s²) instead of instantly.
