StrengthAt the beginning of an investigation, the Deildegast has an upper hand.

How it hunts

Hunt sanity threshold

  • Always: 50%

Standard: 50% average sanity.

Speed

Fixed: 3.0 m/s minus 0.1 for each different object players move or use outside of hunts, down to a minimum of 0.4 m/s (26 objects).

Standard: 1.7 m/s; speeds up with line of sight to 2.8 m/s over 13 s.

All its footsteps
  • Throwable objects, light switches, the fuse box, faucets and so on count. Doors, equipment and cursed possessions don’t.
  • Dead players count too: it’s the only ghost where the dead help.
  • The counter goes back to zero (3.0 m/s) when each hunt ends or when a Crucifix burns.
  • With 9 objects it drops to 2.1 m/s (slower than you sprinting); with 13 it reaches the standard speed of 1.7.

Slower with every object you move

It starts every hunt at 3 m/s, much faster than you. It loses 0.1 m/s for every different object the players move: at 13 it matches a normal ghost, and at 20 it is down to 1 m/s. It does not speed up when it sees you, and its speed resets to 3 m/s when the hunt ends.

A 10 m straight-line race, without line of sight (so neither speeds up), at 100% ghost speed. “You 2.1” is your average running speed.

How it behaves

  • It interacts less with doors and light switches (10% instead of 25%).
  • It sometimes fails to interact with an object (85% success rate) and goes back to its favorite room.

How to test it

  • Slow it down

    Strong

How: Move ~15 different objects before the next hunt.

Result: If it’s now noticeably slower, it’s a Deildegast.

  • First hunt

    Hint

How: Listen to its footsteps during a hunt without having moved anything.

    Result: Extremely fast (3 m/s) and no line-of-sight speed-up.

What rules it out

  • It speeds up with line of sight.

How to survive

  • Move ~15 different objects between hunts.
  • If you died, start moving things!

Mechanics

  • If the ghost is a Deildegast, the “Doors starting open” difficulty option drops one level: there will be fewer open doors than expected.

Edge cases

Trivia

Folklore

  • In Norwegian folklore, the deildegast is someone who, in life, moved the stones that marked property boundaries to steal land from their neighbors. After death they must put them back, but the stones always slip from their grasp. That’s why in the game it’s obsessed with moved objects.

In depth

Based on the article “Deildegast” on the Phasmophobia Wiki on Fandom (version of September 13, 2026, authors), under the CC BY-SA 3.0 license. Rewritten and adapted by Phasmopedia.

Activity

  • It touches doors and light switches less: a 10% chance for each, instead of the 25% of a standard ghost.
  • When it tries to interact with an object, it succeeds 85% of the time (100% for other ghosts). If it fails, it enters the favorite room state.

Hunt

It has a fixed speed, with no line-of-sight speed-up, that depends on how many different objects players (dead ones too) have moved or used outside of hunts:

  • It starts at 3.0 m/s and drops 0.1 m/s for each different object, down to a minimum of 0.4 m/s.
  • Throwable objects, light switches, the fuse box, faucets, etc. count. Cursed possessions, doors and equipment do not count.
  • Its speed goes back to 3.0 m/s when each hunt ends or when a Crucifix burns.
Different objects moved Speed
0 3.0 m/s
9 2.1 m/s (below the player’s average speed, 2.125 m/s)
13 1.7 m/s (the standard speed)
26 or more 0.4 m/s (minimum)

Other details

With the Deildegast, the “Doors starting open” difficulty option drops one level. For example, if it’s set to “High,” it actually ends up at “Medium.”

Strategy

  • If it could be a Deildegast, move several different objects before each hunt to lower its speed. Moving about 15 between hunt attempts is recommended: that’s enough for most players to handle it.
  • The test can be done at the same time as the Poltergeist one, because both call for moving objects.
  • Remember that its speed resets after every hunt, so move as much as you can between one and the next. A burned Crucifix also resets the count.
  • It’s the only ghost where the dead help directly: their interactions slow it down too. If it killed you, start throwing things from the afterlife!

Trivia

  • In Norwegian folklore, a deildegast (from deilde, “merestone” or “landmark,” and gast, “ghost”) is the malevolent spirit of someone who, in life, moved the stones marking property boundaries to steal land from their neighbors.
  • After death, it’s forced to haunt the place and put the stones back where they belong before it can rest, which is impossible because they always slip from its grasp. In the game, this shows in how every moved object distracts it and slows it down.
