How it hunts

Hunt sanity threshold

  • Always: 50%

Standard: 50% average sanity.

Speed

Base speed 1.53 m/s (slower than the standard 1.7). With line of sight it reaches 2.53 m/s in 8.7 s, instead of 13 s.

Standard: 1.7 m/s; speeds up with line of sight to 2.8 m/s over 13 s.

All its footsteps
  • If it finds you inside an official hiding spot (the ones that can be blocked), the hunt ends instantly and it doesn’t kill you.
  • But on the NEXT hunt it heads straight for where you were, even during the grace period.

Starts slow, speeds up fast

Its base speed is 1.53 m/s, lower than normal, but when it sees you it speeds up faster than any other ghost: it gains 7.5% of its base per second and reaches 2.53 m/s in about 8.7 s. Between 8 and 12 s into the chase it is faster than a normal ghost, although its top speed is lower (2.53 m/s versus 2.8).

Both see you from second 0 and chase you in a straight line. 100% ghost speed. “You 2.1” is your average running speed.

How it behaves

    How to test it

    • The hiding spot

Conclusivehigh risk: if it isn’t an Aswang, it kills you

How: Hide in an official hiding spot during a hunt.

Result: If it finds you and the hunt cuts off without killing you, it’s an Aswang.

    • Slow start, brutal acceleration

      Hint

How: Watch its speed at the start of the hunt and when it sees you.

Result: It starts slower than normal and speeds up very fast once it sees you.

    What rules it out

    • It kills someone inside an official hiding spot.
    • It starts even one hunt at a fast base speed.

    How to survive

    • Hide: it can’t kill you in official hiding spots.
    • If it found you hiding, move somewhere else before the next hunt.

    Mechanics

    • Its weakness doesn’t apply in “unofficial” hiding spots or if the difficulty has 0 hiding places: only the ones that can be blocked count.

    Folklore

    • In Filipino folklore, Aswangs are shapeshifters that hunt for human flesh and blood at night and disguise themselves as people by day. The Aswang isn’t a single individual: it’s an entire species.

    History

    • When it was released, a rumor spread (from an Insym stream) that it hunted with no grace period. Three days later it was corrected: what really happens is that it heads straight for your position on the next hunt if it found you hiding.

    Hunt

    • Base speed: 1.53 m/s, slower than the standard (1.7 m/s).
    • It speeds up faster than any other ghost when it sees you: it gains 7.5% of its base speed per second (other ghosts gain 5%). It reaches its maximum of 2.53 m/s in about 8.67 s, versus 13 s for most ghosts.
    • It can’t kill anyone hiding in an official hiding spot (closets, lockers and the other hiding spots that can be blocked). If it finds you and reaches you in there, the hunt ends instantly.
    • But it remembers: if a hunt ended that way, at the start of the next one it marks your position and heads straight for you, even during the grace period. That’s why it sometimes seems to hunt with no grace period.

    Strategy

It’s one of the easiest ghosts to deal with: it has no major strengths, its base speed is low and it can’t kill anyone who is hiding. Watch out for two things:

    • The weakness only counts in official hiding spots, the ones that can be blocked and that change with the “Number of hiding places” custom difficulty option. If that option is set to zero, or you hide somewhere that isn’t official, it can kill you.
    • If a hunt ended because it found you hiding, on the next one it will head straight for you.

    How to identify it

    • Its speed can be mistaken for that of the Obambo or the Twins. Watch it over several hunts: if its base speed ever goes up, it isn’t an Aswang.
    • A hunt that ends abruptly right when it reaches a hiding spot with someone inside is a telltale sign of an Aswang.

    Trivia

    • In Filipino folklore, aswang are malevolent shapeshifting creatures that hunt at night for human flesh and blood. They’re said to take many forms: vampire, witch, viscera sucker or ghoul.
    • By day they passed themselves off as humans, and at night they returned to their own form to hunt. According to tradition, they aren’t a single being but an entire species.
