How it hunts

Hunt sanity threshold

  • Always: 50%

Standard: 50% average sanity.

Speed

1.7 m/s, the same as most ghosts.

Speeds up with line of sight, up to 2.8 m/s over 13 s.

All its footsteps
  • Visible 55-63% of the time during a hunt (31-33% for other ghosts): it flickers less.

Stays visible much longer

Its flickers last longer and its gaps are short: it is visible 55-63% of the time, almost twice as much as a normal ghost (31-33%). Sometimes two flickers merge and it looks like it is not flickering at all. The Deogen looks almost the same: you cannot tell them apart by their flickering.

Timings from the game’s timers. The strip shows the last few seconds: each bar is a flicker and the space between two is a gap. The hunt starts at second 0, when the grace period ends.

How it behaves

  • Activity +30 with someone within 6 m or in the same room.
  • Doesn’t do the mist form ghost event.
  • Does the chasing ghost event more often (40% versus 20%).
  • Appears in its full form 2 out of 3 times.
  • If it collides with you during a ghost event, it takes 20% of your sanity (10% for other ghosts).

How to test it

  • Always in view

    Strong

How: Watch how it flickers during a hunt.

Result: It stays visible much longer than normal.

What rules it out

  • Doing the mist form ghost event (careful: the chasing ghost event can hiss too).

Often confused with

Share two evidence

If those two are all you’ve found, it could still be any of these.

How to survive

  • Your sanity drops fast because of its ghost events: have Sanity Medication and Incense ready ahead of time.

More facts

Mechanics

  • There are 4 hisses that only the chasing ghost event makes; only one is shared with the mist form. That’s how you tell an Oni hiss from one that rules it out.

Folklore

  • In Japan, an oni is an ogre with horns, tusks and an iron club. In the game it looks nothing like that: it uses the same ghost models and American names as every other ghost.

History

  • Until v0.19.0, its singing ghost event took 10% sanity instead of the 20% it should have; this was fixed in August 2026.

In depth

Based on the article “Oni” on the Phasmophobia Wiki on Fandom (version of September 5, 2026, authors), under the CC BY-SA 3.0 license. Rewritten and adapted by Phasmopedia.

Activity

  • If at least one player is within 6 m, or in the same room as it, its activity goes up by 30 points.
  • During ghost events:
    • It can’t do the mist form ghost event: the ball of fog that moves toward you and usually disappears with a hiss when it touches you. Careful: the chasing ghost event can hiss too.
    • It picks the chasing ghost event 40% of the time (20% for other ghosts), or 60% with The Devil Tarot Card.
    • When it manifests, it appears in its full form 2/3 of the time, instead of as a shadow or translucent form.
    • If it collides with the player during a ghost event, it takes double the sanity: 20% instead of 10%.

Hunt

It flickers differently: during a hunt it’s visible for longer than other ghosts, between 55.3% and 63% of the time (normally it’s between 30.7% and 33.2%).

Strategy

  • Since it’s more active, it tends to give up its evidence quickly, and the investigation can be short and generous.
  • Ruling it out: if the ghost does the mist form ghost event, it isn’t an Oni. But careful, the Oni can hiss during a chasing ghost event. To tell them apart: in the chasing ghost event you hear the ghost’s voice and footsteps, and the doors in the room usually close. Also, there are four hisses the mist form ghost event can’t make; only one is shared by both events.
  • It isn’t especially aggressive, but since it does more ghost events (and takes double the sanity when it collides with you during them), it can quickly bring the team down to its hunt threshold. Depending on the situation, offset it with Sanity Medication or bring in the Incense sooner.

Trivia

In Japanese folklore, an oni (鬼) is a kind of ogre or demon, considered a type of yōkai. It’s usually depicted as huge, with horns, claws and tusks, red, green or blue skin, and a large iron club. In the game it has none of that: it shares ghost models and names with the other ghosts, so it looks like an American and is named like one.
