StrengthUpon entering the location, Thaye will become active, defensive and agile.
WeaknessThaye will weaken over time, making them weaker, slower and less aggressive.
How it hunts
Hunt sanity threshold
- Age 0 (start): 75%
- Age 5: 45%
- Age 10 or more: 15%
Standard: 50% average sanity.
Speed
Age 0: 2.75 m/s; drops 0.175 for each year of age; minimum 1.0 m/s at age 10.
Standard: 1.7 m/s; speeds up with line of sight to 2.8 m/s over 13 s.
All its footsteps- The threshold drops 6 points for each year of age.
- With sanity below the threshold, it always has a 1 in 8 chance of trying to hunt, no matter how low sanity gets.
- After 4 years it’s already slower than you sprinting; after 7, slower than you walking.
Slower as it ages
It starts young and very fast: 2.75 m/s, faster than you running. Each time it ages it loses 0.175 m/s; at age 6 it matches a normal ghost, and at 10 or more it stays at 1 m/s. It does not speed up when it sees you. It ages when you spend time near it.
A 10 m straight-line race, without line of sight (so neither speeds up), at 100% ghost speed. “You 2.1” is your average running speed.
How it behaves
- It ages: it first tries 1 min after the door is opened; if someone is in the same room as it or within 3 m, it ages a year and tries again in 1-2 min (if not, in 30 s).
- Its activity starts at 200% and drops 15% per year, down to 50%.
- It does fewer and fewer ghost events: after 9 years it doesn’t do any (except with cursed possessions).
- The age the Ouija Board gives goes up by 1 to 4 years each time it ages.
- It interacts with doors a bit more often (30% instead of 25%).
How to test it
Slower and slower
StrongHow: Compare its hunts over the course of the contract while spending time near it.
Result: Fast at the start, slower hunt after hunt, and no speeding up with line of sight: Thaye.
The Ouija Board
StrongRisk: the Ouija Board costs sanityHow: Ask the Ouija Board its age, spend time near it, and ask again.
Result: If the age went up, it’s a Thaye.
What rules it out
- Speeding up with line of sight.
Often confused with
DeildegastFast at the start of the contract. The Thaye slows down as it ages (from players being near it), not from objects being moved.See its page
DemonVery early hunts. The Thaye calms down over time; the Demon doesn’t.See its page
DeogenA young Thaye is very fast. The Deogen slows way down as it gets close to you.See its page
ObamboIts speed and threshold change, and they share 2 evidence types. The Obambo does speed up with line of sight and can change speed in the middle of a hunt.See its page
How to survive
- Find it fast: early on it’s one of the most dangerous ghosts.
- Spend time in its room to age it before doing hunt-related objectives.

Mechanics
Each time it ages, the age the Ouija Board gives goes up by 1 to 4 years, with no limit.
After aging 9 times it can no longer do ghost events (unless they’re forced with cursed possessions).
Trivia
It’s pronounced “thuh-yeh.” In Burma, thaye (or tasei) are spirits with many forms that cause minor nuisances in the dead of night.

Ability: aging
The Thaye has an internal “age” that controls how much it does:
- It tries to age for the first time 1 minute after an exit door is opened.
- If at least one player is in the same room as it or within 3 m, it adds 1 to its age and tries again in 1 to 2 minutes. If nobody is there, it tries again in 30 s.
- If it ages during a hunt, the change takes effect when the hunt ends.
| Age | Hunt sanity threshold | Activity | Hunt speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 (start) | 75% | 200% | 2.75 m/s |
| 1 | 69% | 185% | 2.575 m/s |
| 2 | 63% | 170% | 2.4 m/s |
| 3 | 57% | 155% | 2.225 m/s |
| 4 | 51% | 140% | 2.05 m/s |
| 5 | 45% | 125% | 1.875 m/s |
| 6 | 39% | 110% | 1.7 m/s |
| 7 | 33% | 95% | 1.525 m/s |
| 8 | 27% | 80% | 1.35 m/s |
| 9 | 21% | 65% | 1.175 m/s |
| 10 or more | 15% | 50% | 1 m/s |
Due to a development oversight, each threshold is actually 1% lower than the one in the table.
Each time it ages, the “human” age the Ouija Board gives goes up by 1 to 4 years, with no limit you could realistically reach. Like any ghost, it starts with a human age between 10 and 90.
Activity
- When it tries to do a ghost event, it succeeds with a probability of (1 − age ÷ 9). After aging 9 times it can no longer do ghost events, unless you force them with cursed possessions.
- It interacts with doors a bit more than most ghosts: a 30% chance instead of the standard 25%.
Hunt
- It doesn’t get more likely to hunt as sanity drops: below its threshold, every time it leaves its idle state it always has a 1/8 chance of starting a hunt.
- It doesn’t speed up with line of sight.
Strategy
- Early on it interacts and does ghost events very often, so it’s usually easy to find. But if you take a while to locate it (especially on large maps), it can be one of the most dangerous ghosts: its starting threshold is higher than the Demon’s and it’s very fast during those first hunts. Find your hiding spots as soon as you can.
- Use that early activity to complete the non-hunt objectives and take photos. If you’re careful about how you interact with it, a (near-)perfect investigation is easy to pull off. If you spend too much time in the ghost room, it ages fast and, without cursed possessions to make up for it, getting objectives and photos becomes a chore.
- Leave the hunt-related objectives for when it’s no longer a threat: after aging 4 times it’s slower than your average sprinting speed, and after 7 times, slower than your walking speed, so you can loop it with no trouble. A safe way to do it is to stay in the ghost room until it ages and then force a hunt with a cursed possession.
How to identify it
- Don’t mistake it for the Obambo, which has two very different speeds and thresholds depending on its state; the two also share two pieces of evidence.
- If it’s fast at first, gets slower from one hunt to the next as you spend time near it, and doesn’t speed up with line of sight, it’s probably a Thaye. The Obambo does speed up with line of sight and can change speed mid-hunt: that’s how you tell them apart.
- If it hunts early and is very active, but over time it hunts, interacts, and does ghost events less and less, that also points to the Thaye.
Trivia
- Thaye (pronounced “thuh-yeh”), also called sarai or tasei in Burmese (သရဲ), are disembodied spirits from Myanmar folklore that have many forms at once, depending on who’s looking at them. They appear in the dead of night and cause minor nuisances.
- When the Mimic mimics a Thaye, it picks a random age.
